About us
An Orthodox Church for the Roanoke Valley
St. Ambrose is a family friendly Orthodox Church serving the Roanoke Valley. We hold our services in English and have booklets visitors can use to follow along. Whether you’ve been Orthodox your whole life or haven’t heard of our faith until today, we welcome you to join us.
Church services we commonly hold
Every weekend, we worship on Saturday evening at 6pm and Sunday mornings at 9:30am. The weekday service schedule varies and can be found on our Service Schedule page.
Great Vespers
Every Saturday evening at 6pm, we begin Great Vespers. This service consists of prayers, Psalms, and songs that we offer to our Lord. A short reflection is offered at the end. Duration: about 1 hour.
Hours & Divine Liturgy
Every Sunday morning at 9:30am, we begin the 3rd & 6th Hour Prayers. After about 20 minutes, we begin the Divine Liturgy, which is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Total time is about two hours.
Other Services
Most weeks, there will be Vespers one evening and Divine Liturgy the following morning. The days on which we hold these weekday services varies depending on the liturgical schedule. See our calendar for more info.
What to expect
For those who are new to Orthodoxy…
I remember being intimidated the first time I decided to attend an Orthodox church. There are some significant differences compared to other Christian congregations. For example, we have a very reverent atmosphere, we stand through most of our services, sacraments are only for the Orthodox, and we venerate icons. When I was still new to Orthodoxy, I wrote a guide to help others who found themselves in a similar situation. You can read my guide at the link below.
